The Male Couple's Guide: Finding a Man, Making a Home, Building a Life by Eric Marcus HarperPerennial, $14.00 paper
Reviewed by Timothy Robson
The American appetite for self-help books continues unabated, so one supposes that gay and lesbian authors might as well cash in. In his introduction, Eric Marcus describes a lack of "how-to-make-your-manhappy" books aimed at a non-heterosexual audience; clearly, both he and HarperCollins perceive a need.
Marcus is the author of the prize-winning Making History: The Struggle for Gay and Lesbian Equal Rights, 1945 to 1990, which has recently been reissued in paperback by HarperPerennial. This book is a revised edition of his 1988 The Male Couple's Guide to Living Together and covers all too briefly such topics as meeting and finding a man; how to get along as a couple; monogamy and nonmonogamy; parenting; finances; aging and health; and others.
The Male Couple's Guide is by its own admission not scientific or objective. For much of the non-factual material, the author relies upon interviews with gay men, single and coupled. It is not stated how the interviewees were chosen.
As with many books of this sort, it is not
clear who the intended audience is. One suspects that the successful couple doesn't need such a book; likewise, for those unlucky in love, this book is probably not going to solve their problems. (While reading this book I was reminded of the image in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes of Kathy Bates dressing up in cellophane to arouse her husband.) Doesn't it seem odd to read a book to decide how often to have sex? Perhaps, but then again, Dear Abby and Ann Landers have made careers out of answering such questions.
The most useful parts of the book are the bibliographies and lists of contacts; unfortunately, factual information is generally out of date the day a book is published. For more in-depth information on important topics covered in this book, one should turn elsewhere: for basic legal questions, read A Legal Guide for Lesbian and Gay Couples (Nolo Press, 6th ed., 1991); for information on parenting and adoption, see Dr. April Martin's The Lesbian and Gay Parenting Handbook (HarperPerennial, 1993); for advice on sexual techniques, try The New Joy of Gay Sex (HarperCollins, 1992) or Gay Sex, by Jack Hart (Alyson, 1991).
The Male Couple's Guide tries to cover too much territory too briefly. One sniffs the unmistakable scent of disposable income dollars to be made in its publication. Eric Marcus is an excellent writer; you should buy the Making History reprint instead.
Certain Terror anthologists to visit Gifts of Athena
Patricia Myers and Richard Cleaver, editors of the new anthology book A Certain Terror: Heterosexism, Militarism, Violence & Change, will be at Gifts of Athena on Saturday, July 31, starting at 7 pm.
A Certain Terror, published by the American Friends Service Committee, is 400 pages of essays, fiction, poems, cartoons and a play from a respectable crosssection of the gay, lesbian and bisexual community. Harold Jordan, Gregory Herek, bell hooks, Audre Lorde, Donna Minkowitz, Michael Bronski, Jewelle Gomez, and Gloria Anzaldua are just some of the contributing authors.
The articles expose the roots of homophobic violence and its interconnections with the militarism in American society, more focused than ever because of the "gays in the military" debate. The authors, and their views, cross the barriers of race,
class, gender and sexual orientation while exploring homophobia, language, politics, sexualities, war culture, strategies and visions.
Cleaver has been active in both lesbiangay organizing and in the peace movement since the late 1960s, specializing in nonviolent direct action and U.S. foreign and military policy. Myers teaches women's studies at the University of Michigan and Indiana University at South Bend.
Gifts of Athena is at 2199 Lee Rd. in Cleveland Heights.
